Learning and development
Our Groom Rooms offer opportunities for people with some experience or none, because we have all the training in place to take you from a new colleague to an experienced groomer and beyond into management. It just depends how far you want to go.
Our dedicated internal training programme will take you through three levels:
- Prep It will take you through your first six weeks, introducing you to your general role and teaching you the essentials. Those begin with preparing, bathing, drying and brushing dogs competently. You’ll also learn all about the equipment we use in salons, dog breeds and coat types, whilst at all times making sure pet and colleague welfare remain your priority. Along the way, you’ll put together your portfolio, which is a record of all the different dogs you have groomed. You’ll also be helped with a number of off-the-job courses, including canine first aid and pet behaviour. After successfully completing your first six weeks, you’ll receive an Earn as you Learn payment.
- Clip It builds on the skills learnt in Prep it and shows you how to clip off breeds competently and perform tidy trims. You’ll also learn about dog behaviour and nutrition, as well as more in-depth information about parasites, skin conditions and other health problems that you might see on pets in the salon. You’ll also keep putting together your pet portfolio and successful completion of Prep It means another Earn as you Learn payment.
- Snip It focuses on learning the different breeds we work with and being able to do the required breed standard groom. At this stage, you’ll also learn about running a salon commercially and how we share the knowledge and expertise that we have with our customers. On successful completion of this stage you’ll be a qualified stylist!
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Qualified stylists can continue to professionally develop through our CPD offering. This includes handstrip and cat grooming training which are both advanced grooming techniques.
Competitions & Awards
Throughout the year, the grooming industry runs several grooming competitions across the country. We support and subsidise our grooming colleagues to enter as it’s a great way of showing our customers and the industry the high levels of expertise we have working at Pets at Home.
Our salon colleagues love entering these competitions because they learn lots from them. Plus, we now have several award-winning colleagues.
City and Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 Qualification
All salon managers are enrolled onto the City and Guild Level 2 Dog Grooming qualification, then progress to the Level 3. Because we value pet welfare and support your development, we subsidise your qualification.
Nutrition Training and SQP
Groom Room colleagues spend a lot of time with their pet customers and so they can see the effects of correct nutrition on their skin and coat. All Groom Room colleagues are Nutrition trained to advise and support our customers on the correct food to help with their pet’s health.
Salon Managers are also trained to be an SQP and receive training to be able to apply the product to our pet customers.
