We’re the UK’s number one pet specialist store – something we’ve only achieved thanks to the fantastic pet and product knowledge of our Colleagues. We believe in continually developing peoples skills throughout their careers and we have a wealth of fantastic training packages to offer.
Our ‘Steps to Success’ programme is completed by all of our retail colleagues and allows them to build on their knowledge as they learn more about the business. We are keen to train colleagues as a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) in dispensing licensed medicines and this comes with a financial reward as part of our ‘Earn as you Learn’ scheme.
Our ‘Steps to Success’ programme allows Colleagues to build on their knowledge as they learn more about the business whilst at the same time increasing their rate of pay! By the end of the programme our Colleagues are experts and can specialise in a particular area of the company such as Nutrition or Aquatics.
We’re always on the look-out for our Managers of tomorrow, and therefore we offer an in-house training programme called ‘Rising Stars’ for those Colleagues who are looking to move up into the Management team.
Another route that our Colleagues can take is through our Groom Room should they fancy a change in direction but still want to pursue a career with us. Colleagues go on our 20-week ‘Power to Your Paws’ course which covers all the grooming basics and gives them the knowledge and experience to apply for the next Assistant Stylist position when it arises.
We’re keen to promote our Assistant Managers whenever we can and therefore we have our ‘Moving on up’ in-house training programme which is designed to develop management skills, so that Assistant Managers are ready for that next step into a Deputy Management role.
This includes those activities that will provide our Store Manager’s with new knowledge or skills such as running a roadshow, taking part in a stock take, running recruitment evenings, becoming a coach/mentor for others, project work for the area, learning more about other areas of our business, such as Grooming, Vets, Support Office and Distribution.
Bite-sized chunks of learning
This involves attending workshops to learn and develop new practical skills. Following attendance at the workshop our manager’s will have a number of actions to implement and will discuss their learning with their line manager.
We open every new store with an experienced Store Manager from within the business. When you’re opening at least 20 new stores every year this home grown talent has to come from somewhere, so we look no further than our Deputy Managers! We have an intensive six-month fast-track training programme for our Deputy Managers which involves courses, projects and presentations, and on successful completion Deputy Manager’s are eligible for promotions when they become available!
New Store Managers joining Pets at Home will complete a number of courses to help get to grips with the business and how we work. This includes a pet and fish course, as well as training on equality and diversity and commerciality.
Our Store Managers then join our CPD (Continuing Personal Development) Programme. The programme is built around the premise of Store Managers acquiring 50 development points per year and for each activity that a Store Manager completes they are awarded a certain number of development points. Store managers are be provided with a ‘Pawsport to Learning’ to record their learning and points earned on.
Points can be acquired by taking part in a number of development activities which include Hands-on learning, Bite-sized chunks of learning, Manager’s Morsels and Pet Tube, all of which are detailed below.
As a Pets at Home Manager you’ll also receive regular reviews and detailed succession planning, so that we can identify potential Senior Store Managers and Area Managers of the future!
Senior Store Managers
We only appoint Senior Store Managers internally from our existing Store Manager population. These people deputise for the Area Manager and are the key communicators in their absence.
These are 1-page guides for our manager’s which include information, hints, tips, ideas and best practice on a number of topics ranging from how to run team meetings to tips on giving feedback, how to motivate your team, how to delegate, body language, dealing with change, etc. Manager’s then use this information whilst carrying out their role.
Pet tube stores a number of management-related videos and clips that can provide best practice, hints and tips on a variety of topics where the learning can then be applied in role.
