International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2021
To mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2021, Amy, our Product Technologist tells us how Pets at Home has supported her within her role to expand her skills and gives her advice on the value of studying science related subjects in school.
How has the Pets at Home Group supported you to be the best you can be in your role?
I can’t thank Pets at Home and especially the head of my department and line manager enough for supporting my goals and aspirations. With frequent in-house courses to develop professional or personal skills, to encouraging external courses – whether that be day courses or my Food Science & Innovation degree. All is giving me not only experience and further knowledge, but also personal confidence which in turn makes me more efficient within my role. These skills are also transferrable, across departments and industry and so not limited to the pet world.
How is your course going to help you in your role in the Technical & Quality Assurance Team?
My Food Science & Innovation degree covers a broad range of topics which reaches various roles within our team, for example even though my role is a Food Technologist, it also explores New Product Development. I work closely with NPD managers, so having this knowledge and insight gives me a further understanding of requirements as well as personal development in other areas.
Other modules such as food processing, packaging and production and the addition to food science and food safety also supports the development of my relationships with suppliers and identify any potential issues or hurdles within product development or existing product which enables proactivity and efficient resolutions.
What advice would you give to girls studying science in schools?
The great thing with science related courses, is that it opens doors to such a great range of careers. Whether that be Food Science roles like mine, laboratory work, forensics, chemistry… the possibilities really are endless! My advice would be is to follow your passions and let that lead you on your career path accordingly.
In my own experience, as a huge animal lover, and pet owner, animal welfare has always been very important to me. I’m not over exaggerating when I say I put the health of my dog, Pudding above my own. It gives me great comfort therefore that I contribute to development and safety of nutritious, quality pet food and added bonus I’m doing a role I love.
