Longest dog lead is world record for Pets at Home

A world record was made on Sunday 7th October 2012 at North Bay Beach in Scarborough when Pets at Home unveiled the world’s longest dog lead, which reached an amazing 3,371.50 metres long! Mike Southwick, Store Manager of Pets at Home in Scarborough, worked with pet specialists to create the lead which spans over two miles – that’s more than four times the previous world record.

The previous record of 686 metres was held by dog food company Pedigree, which produced the lead with the help of visitors to the Crufts show in 2005.

Pets at Home gave one lucky dog the chance to be the first dog to wear the record-breaking dog lead and be guest of honour at the unveiling. Store manager Mike Southwick said: “All of our Pets at Home stores in the North East asked customers to pay £1 to enter the draw for their dog to be photographed at the head of the lead.” All money donated went to Support Adoption for Pets, our own charity which offers financial support to animal welfare charities and rehoming centres across the UK.

The dog lead was independently measured and witnessed by a chartered surveyor prior to the event and a written statement was then provided to the Guinness World Records as proof of the record.
