On joining our Distribution Centres, Colleagues are given an in-depth 12-week training programme which provides them with all the skills and knowledge to do a great job and then begin to plan the route for their career with us.
From your first day in our Distribution Centres we want you to be fully on board with us. We offer a comprehensive training pack involving everything that you need to get started in your new role. Along with learning where everything is and how to stay safe, you’ll also be introduced to our company values, the work our stores do and how we support them in achieving our company mission. You will have regular meetings with your manager during your training to ensure that you are kept informed on how you are doing.
Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE)
We have MHE trainers based in both of our Distribution Centres, ready to train you in our full range of equipment, from a Low Level Order Picker through to Counterbalance and Reach trucks. Whether you come to us with previous experience of MHE or you’re a complete novice, we will ensure that you have all of the skills you need to be safe and successful.
Stretch for success
We’re always looking at where our talent is in our Distribution Centres. We don’t just look at how you have performed over the year, but also where you want to go, so we can give you the support and training that you need to get there. It’s during this review that you will have a great opportunity to discuss the options in ‘Clear Route Ahead’ and decide if you want some ‘route guidance’ with one of our apprenticeship programmes to gain a national qualification in Warehouse & Storage or Business Improvement Techniques. Alternatively you may like to take the path to ‘develop your career’ with 3 stages of career development programmes to give you the skills needed to take you to the next level of your career and progress to be a manager with us.
We know that starting a new job means taking in lots of new information and we want this to be as easy as possible. We have a team of Buddies in our Distribution Centres who are there to help you learn your new job with practical training, and to make it even simpler we also have a suite of books to help you learn.
Drivers all know the importance of keeping their development up to date to retain their certificate of professional competence (CPC). We have developed a suite of one day modules covering a variety of topics for drivers to choose from so that their training time can be used on something they want to learn! We have topics ranging from the usual safe and fuel efficient driving but including modules focused on improving the health and well-being of drivers and training drivers in first aid in case they are ever first on the scene of an accident on the road.
Delivering Your Future
As a new manager in our distribution team there are many new and exciting opportunities to learn and develop your expertise. To help you decide which learning is most important and relevant for you we have divided the journey into three key stages. You will start by ‘setting off’ on your journey with a suite of modules designed to develop your knowledge of our business and enhance your management skills in line with how we do things at Pets at Home. Once you’re ‘getting going’ we provide you with more in-depth learning, but it doesn’t end there! We want our managers to ‘keep moving’ and so we offer a number of ways for you to continue to develop in your role and prepare to deliver your future!
