What’s the best thing about working here?

The people I work with, we are all like one big family. I love meeting all the customers and their pets and being able to help them. I also love working with all of our small furry friends and fish and caring for them.

Describe the culture

It is a culture of fun. We are encouraged to make everyday life at work a nice, fun place to be e.g. fancy dress, team nights/days out, awards and bringing our pets into work.

What do you get up to on a typical day/week?

I start by setting up for the day, stock control, serving customers, check-ins’ on pets, delegating tasks to colleagues, training colleagues, taking in deliveries etc.

Tell us about the learning and development?

There is so much L&D! As a new colleague there are lots of online training and books to do. Once a year has passed you have the opportunity to do expertise courses in any chosen area. As a manager there are a lot of CPD courses and the chance to progress to the next step.

What opportunities are there for career progression?

There are so many opportunities. There are programmes for each step, Rising Stars, moving on up and Fast track. I started on a 12-hour contract and now I am a Deputy Manager. There is also the chance to progress in pet expertise to become area experts.

Tell us about the rewards and benefits?

There are lots of rewards and benefits on offer. You get 20% off in store as well as at the vets and in the Groom Room, you get your birthday off, charity days, a day off if you get a new pet, an extra week's holiday if you get married, competitive pay and bonuses and the biggest reward for me is working for a business that loves animals.

How does Pets at Home give back to the community?

There are charity events in store for local animal charities. We have Beavers, Guides, Brownies and cubs visit us for animal badges, and we do children’s workshops.
